Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) is a dancer and a successful music and dance troupe director. He believes that Nisha (Karishma Kapoor), his best dancer, is his good friend. Nisha works like his friend, but he secretly loves her. The story also introduces Puja (Madhuri Dixit), who believes that everyone, everywhere, for everyone, and when she gets a special someone, she must give them a hint/signal from God. Puja is a motherless orphan friend of theirs. Their son Ajay (Akshay Kumar) is her good friend.
While dancing, Nisha feels pain, and in this case, Rahul needs a new dancer for the dance troupe. Rahul admires Puja's dance. They both become secret admirers of each other, but it doesn't work out legally. Puja, unknown to Rahul, is already engaged to Ajay. The romance between others becomes complicated, and her father and uncle, who want to see their son married, are disappointed. She tries to maintain her distance from Rahul, and he, through mixed signals, doesn't push the matter further.
Nisha, blinded by her jealousy, is at odds with the committee. Despite her attempts to put an end to the matter, she decides to leave India for their sake. She truly loves Rahul and wishes him well, only for him.
In preparation for the new performance, Puja ultimately informs Rahul that she is engaged to Ajay and Rahul is deeply hurt. She tries to show her new unhappiness in the final scene, which is modified. Nisha, who had initially accused it of being an unhappy ending, is willing to change it from Rahul, and the story portrays Puja's relationship with the committee in a different light.
In the end, Rahul and Puja make a final attempt to revive their love. Puja, who was engaged to Ajay, decides to release herself from her commitment, and Puja and Rahul are reunited, torn between love and duty until the end.
